Even on short day hikes, I highly recommend Trekking Poles. In the beginning, they can make you feel awkward but the more you use them, the more they feel like a vital part of your hiking experience.

I personally use the same poles for downhill skiing, snowshoeing and year round hiking. I love them. You can purchase a pair of poles at a thrift store for as little as $3 if you keep your eyes open! Also watch for poles at yard sales, garage sales, Play it Again Sports and other used sports equipment locations if you want to save money.

Sanctuary

My soul finds rest in these mountains
High against the sky I find my destiny,
In these craggy towering peaks.
The earthy smells of the trees and pines
and even the rocks and earth, rise to greet me.

The rushing spring whispers to me
Come see and be part of this cathedral
Listen to my song, hear the forest choir sing,
Worship here and be at peace.

The bull moose stands majestically as I walk by,
He looks at me and seems to ask,
What are you doing here in this my sanctuary?

I have come to understand what and who I am,
Where I came from and where I 'm going

As I face the raging storm, my resolve is strong
Neither the cold bitter wind nor freezing temperatures
Or the impossible situation, shall deter me
Rather this shall make me stronger and more determined
To reach the lofty heights, to touch the face of God.

But I am but one of the group, not the leader
For she is in front leading us on in her gentle way

Snow walking » Relatively inexpensive equipment is all that separates novices and occasional recreationists from some sure-footed wintertime adventure.

Big Cottonwood Canyon » Walking on water is possible if you have the right kind of shoes.

Sure, the water is the frozen kind, but snowshoes can make for some smooth sailing in a winter wonderland. Why limit hiking to three seasons when technology has reduced the cost and made it easier to explore the wilds in winter?

And let's get the "waddle like a duck" image out of the way. Snowshoeing is not difficult. If you can walk, you can snowshoe.

"To be honest, the only ones intimidated by snowshoes are the adults," said Bob Bob Benton of Sandy.

Benton has been leading snowshoers through the powder for three years as part of the Cottonwood Canyons Foundation's
Volunteers and other members of the Cottonwood Canyons Foundation head out into the Spruces campground in Big Cottonwood Canyon during one of their snowshoe volunteer training classes. (Steve Griffin / The Salt Lake Tribune)
guided snowshoe tours.

"The adults think they have to look cool and do it right and they end up struggling," Benton said. "The kids just start clomping along and have fun with it. Once the adults relax, they realize it isn't as hard as they are making it."

Cottonwood Canyons Foundation is one of many groups that offer snowshoeing tours and adventures across the state. State parks, nature centers and nordic centers also often offer tours in conjunction with rentals.

Snowshoeing is a great outdoor activity in the winter while skiing can be much more expensive. It is a very different experience, quiet and serene and very easy to do. It is fun to help people discover the same thing I did.

Those who do embrace walking on water usually end up talking to Gary Nichols. He has been helping people pick snowshoes at the Salt Lake REI store for 20 years.

"Snowshoes that we would consider in the recreational category now are probably better than the top-of-the-line shoes 15 years ago," Nichols said. "Any of the recreational shoes we sell now would outdo those from 15 or 20 years ago."

Nichols always asks would-be buyers if they had a chance to try snowshoeing. If they haven't, he suggests they head over to the rental shop.

"If there are two or three of them, I tell them to trade off and take turns trying different pairs," he said. "You may discover that you like a certain brand more than the other."

Snowshoes are not the only gear you will need for a winter getaway. Like everything else in the winter, good socks and boots are vital in a safe and fun adventure.

"A lot of people do fine in their regular hiking boots as long as they are waterproof and they are wearing gaiters to keep snow from flipping into the boots," he said.

Nichols said most people find big snow boots to be heavy, and the loose fit usually associated with them can lead to blisters.

"If you are actively hiking ,the regular hiking boots and good socks should be enough to keep your feet warm," he said. "People who might be standing in the snow, like photographers, may want the heavier boots."

Poles, while not necessary, can help with balance issues and in steep terrain. Just make sure they are ski poles or trekking poles with large baskets on the end that won't sink too far in the snow.

Like all winter mountain explorers, snowshoers should educate themselves on avalanche safety. All backcountry adventurers on snow should be carrying a beacon, probe and a shovel, and more important, know how to use one. A visit to the Utah Avalanche Center's Web site -- utahavalanchecenter.org/ -- for current conditions is also a requirement before heading out.

Why our snow is SO light....

We spend a lot of time in our Wasatch Mountains skiing and snowshoeing, which sits fairly close to the Great Salt Lake. This simple fact of geography is the answer why we have so much deep LIGHT powder snow.

Storm clouds approaching from the NW pick-up moisture from the massive lake (which can be seen from outer space). Loaded with moisture, these systems hit the Wasatch Mountains and are forced over the mountain ranges losing the ability to hold moisture.

Our mountains become the recipients of the coldest, driest snow in the world. Just so you know, our snow averages a mere 6% water content…for example, compared to Whistler’s 15-20%.

Meet Tripod Jason - or at least half of him...

Meet the crazy side of Tripod Jason... We call him "Tripod" Jason because he loves nature photography and he used to carry a tripod on every hike but doesn't do that so much anymore. On this occasion while we were snowshoeing and Zipfy Riding at the Spruces, in Big Cottonwood Canyon, he decided to have some fun with the deep powder snow and go in 'head first' into this hollow area near a tree.

At first glance it may look like he crashed into this tree but instead he actually dug a hole into snow. This could have been a smaller snow cave even. I took this photo before we pulled him out. Come often and meet a lot of fun hikers and snowshoers that show up to our activities!

Toward the last 10 minutes of this 90 minute hike, the wind kicked up a little and we were reminded of what the "wind chill factor" means!

Seventeen of us started out at 15 degrees. It dropped to 10 but was still comfortable with the right clothing on. You need to make sure you have "wind resistant clothing" with you on outings like this.

It was a great outing! Winter hiking and snowshoeing are excellent opportunities to practice and perfect your emergency preparedness skills.

It was a busy workday as commuters rushed headlong toward their busy schedules. But on this day in Washington, D.C., something different happened: a 39-year-old man dressed in jeans, a T-shirt, and a baseball cap took out an old violin and began to play.

Few people noticed. Most kept their eyes on the ground or looked straight ahead. A few, talking on cell phones, raised their voices in order to be heard over the music. These were, after all, busy people. They had work to do and appointments to keep.

And so they did not stop. And they did not listen. And what they missed was a rare performance by one of the greatest violinists in the world playing his Stradivarius violin, worth more than three million dollars. He chose to play some of the most technically demanding, elegant music ever written for his instrument, and he played with all the passion and perfection that he had become known for throughout the world.

His metro-station concert was part of an experiment proposed by a writer for the Washington Post. The question was “How many people would recognize beauty in a place where it wasn’t expected?” During the 43-minute concert, nearly 1,100 people passed by. Of those, only 7 stopped to listen even for a moment.

The writer, who won a Pulitzer Prize for his article about the unheard violinist, summarized the experience with these words: “If we can’t take the time out of our lives to stay a moment and listen to one of the best musicians on Earth play some of the best music ever written; if the surge of modern life so overpowers us that we are deaf and blind to something like that—then what else are we missing?”1
Indeed, the world offers us daily moments of beauty that can enrich our lives—if we open our eyes and open our hearts.

Twin Lakes photos on Saturday from fellow hiker, Fred Palmer. I was amazed at how different it was just 2 days before this. I did this same hike just two days before and it was much sunnier and warmer. Saturday's hike was the coldest one so far this fall season. Just a reminder that winter is right around the corner. Dress in thin layers so you can always adjust to whatever the weather throws at you. Your outside layer should always be a thin nylon windbreaker jacket.

Congratulations to our 9 amazing hikers who climbed Mt. Timpanogos, the 2nd highest mountain in the Wasatch Range, 11,749 ft above sea level. Four made it to the peak, most made it to the saddle and time got in the way for others but it's all good! It's just a GREAT mountain to spend ANY amount of time on!!

I didn't get to go with them yesterday due to a healing foot injury but here are my photos from one year ago. This is one of the GREAT hikes in Utah. I still might make it up back up to the peak before the weather changes! Who knows!

Hula Hooping works your core really well and is becoming VERY popular again! It's a super fun workout, especially when you are doing with other people. Even if you don't know how to Hula Hoop, I'll teach you! It's easy to learn IF you know the right way to do it. I learned to hoop when I was around 21 years old living in Hawaii. I loved it then and I love it now. I also will teach you how to make your own Hula Hoop so you get a good one, at very little cost. I've looked all over SLC and can't find the good ones. The ones online are pretty expensive compared to how much it cost to make one. Watch for an email soon.

When the rest of us headed down the mountain today, Michael continued on to the falls and took this photo. After leaving us at the bridge, it took him approx. 50 min. to get to the falls. He said the trail is in fairly good shape - just a couple of short snow patches.

A “noxious weed” is a legal term used at the federal, state, and
county level to identify and list plants that pose a significant
threat to agriculture, the environment, recreation, and public
health. One weed affecting the Wasatch Front foothills of
concern is myrtle spurge, Euphorbia myrsinites. This weed is
also known as donkey tail spurge.

The Salt Lake County Weed Program, Salt Lake Conservation
District, REI, Utah Native Plant Society and the
Bonneville CWMA (Cooperative Weed Management Area)
are sponsoring a program to manage this noxious weed in
sponsoring “Purge Your Spurge” on Saturday May 9, 2009,
10am to 3:00pm.

You can help by collecting this weed and
exchanging it for Utah native plants at REI at 3285 East 3300
South. Wear protective clothing and gloves and dig up and
bag all your myrtle spurge and remove at least 4” of the rooting
clump.

Myrtle spurge (Euphorbia myrsinites) is a low growing
perennial with trailing fleshy stems. The leaves are fleshy,
blue-green and alternate. Flowers are inconspicuous with
yellow-green, petal-like bracts that appear from March to
May. Myrtle spurge spreads by seed and plants are capable of
projecting seeds up to 15 feet. The plant grows from a taproot,
with new stems emerging in early spring and dying back in
the winter. Plants can grow up to 8-12 inches high and 12-18
inches in width.
Myrtle spurge is an escaped ornamental that quickly crowds out native
plants. The key to effective control of this noxious weed is to
remove plants prior to seed set and to detect and remove new populations in
natural areas early on.

Warning!! All parts of myrtle spurge contain a caustic latex sap that can result in
skin irritation, redness, swelling, and blisters. This plant is poisonous if ingested causing nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Church Fork Waterfalls are BEAUTIFUL!! Late April, Early May

Here is the hike we just did today. It was ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!!!

Drove up Millcreek Canyon, parked at the Birch Hollow portion of the Pipeline Trail, started walking WEST for less than 1/8 of a mile. At that point you'll see a sign and a trail that starts up the mountain heading NorthEast. That is the Birch Hollow Trail. We wanted to get some elevation walking in so we took that trail, which has about 6 switchbacks before you get to a beautiful little overlook area. We stopped there, then went back down and continued heading WEST on the Pipeline Trail. That is 1.6 miles from the Birch Hollow parking lot and the intersection of Grandeur Peak Trail and Pipeline. When we got to the intersection, head down the trail through the Church Fork area, passing SEVERAL BEAUTIFUL WATERFALLS along the way!!! It's absolutely gorgeous!!! Then we stayed on the road and walked back up to our car which took us only 30 minutes to get to. I know Lana isn't fond of walking along the road but right now it's really nice to do that hike as a loop. The road is much shorter than taking the trail back, plus you have to see all the beautiful waterfalls in Church Fork. This hike today was mostly level or downhill, except for the first part that we did which was probably 1/4 of a mile up to the scenic overlook area on that Birch Hollow Trail portion. We started on the trail about 9:15 am then got to the Road at 11:10 - almost 2 hours since we took lots of great photos of the waterfalls! It took only 30 min. to walk up the road and back to our car, passing another pretty waterfall across from Log Haven. It was fantastic!!! This is where I'm going to have my local Saturday hikers go this weekend. Do the loop! You see a lot of things that you can never really see when you are driving up the canyon.

Historic: On January 13, 2009, nine skiers successfully skiied ALL 13 Utah Ski Resorts in one day!

On January 13th, Ski Utah and a team of nine skiers successfully skied all 13 Utah ski and snowboard resorts in a single day. This is the first time in history that every resort in the state has been skied in one day, breaking the record of 11 resorts in a day set during the 2003-04 winter season.

The mission began at Brian Head Resort in southern Utah at 4 a.m. The team drove to the Giant Steps run and enjoyed pristine corduroy snow under the light of a large moon. Mother Nature continued to provide perfect bluebird weather conditions throughout the day. Spectacular snow conditions were complemented by perfect temperatures, mountain-blue skies, gorgeous sunrises and sunsets.

The final stop was at Beaver Mountain, near Logan, over 360 miles north of the mission's starting place. The group arrived at Beaver Mountain just before 8 p.m. and enjoyed three celebratory runs off the Little Beaver Lift. In between, Ski Utah staffer Chris Pearson shuttled the group from ski area to ski area by van.

Winter Exercise Preparation Checklist

• Before starting any exercise program, consult your physician if you have health concerns.

• Spend extra time warming up and cooling down. Gradually increase your heart rate and warm up your muscles. Cool down with lots of gentle stretches to prevent injury.

• Drink lots of water. Dehydration in the winter can be common because you don’t necessarily feel thirsty. Drink at least 8 to 10 ounces of water about 15 minutes before you exercise, and continue to drink during and after your workout.

• Layer your clothing if you will be exercising outside. The first layer should be a synthetic material that wicks sweat and moisture away from your body. The next layer should insulate, like wool or fleece. Your outer layer should protect you from the elements.

• Add other protection as needed. Cover your head. As much as 40 percent of your body heat escapes through your head. Don’t forget sunscreen, sunglasses, and lip balm.

The Salt Palace Convention Center is packed with all sorts of winter recreation gear this week as the annual Outdoor Retailer Winter Market is underway.

Though there are some concerns about how the economy will affect sales, the outdoor recreation industry has weathered economic downturns before, and weathered them well.

"The buzz that's happening right now in the industry is that the days of the American people spending like a drunken sailor are over, and we know that," said Frank Hugelmeyer, president of the Outdoor Industry Association.

Even so, the business of recreating outdoors, and all the gear that goes along with it, is still doing well. As the nation entered into its current recession last year, these folks saw growth.

"During that time, we were growing 9 to 10 percent as an industry; and we saw camping sales increase over 20 percent in this past year," Hugelmeyer said.

In terms of exhibit space and numbers of vendors, this year's show is off about 5 percent. But overall attendance is expected to equal last year at 17,000. Show organizers are thrilled.

"To talk about the scope of trade shows nationally and also globally, this is a great show -- incredibly healthy, incredibly strong," said Mike Wallenfels, of Mountain Hardware.

The positive outlook that's evident here is based on a couple of factors: First, the outdoor recreation business has been down this road before.

"We have a very long history over and over again in any recessionary periods where people return to us," Hugelmeyer said.

"With a little bit of gear that many people still have, recreating in our local parks is still an easy and affordable thing to do," Wallnefels said.

While people may already have the tents and the backpacks, they'll still need to buy other items: fuel for the camp stove, maybe a waterproof jacket or a new pair of boots.

So, while the current consumer psyche may be one of frugality, this industry feels it's still in a "What we're going to see is ‘fun frugality' is going to be the trend coming forward, and that brings them right back to camping, back to hiking, brings them back to our activities. And we know we're going to be playing a big role in healing the American public this year," Hugelmeyer.

A healthy outdoor industry is also very important for the state of Utah. It's responsible for generating $4 billion in retail sales here every year and 65,000 jobs in our states related to outdoor recreation.

The retailers convention runs through Sunday, January 25, 2009
